Mikhail Gorbachev and the end of Communism

Perestroika is a Russian word that means restructuring, which means to the reform in the Soviet Union. Perestroika means a policy so that the Soviet Union could change the economic and political system.

Glasnost is a policy that when the Soviet Union discussed the economic and political problems of the country.

There was a man named Mikhail Gorbachev who opened Churches and allows books to be published that were normally band. He also allowed the people of the country to talk openly about ways to improve there homeland. This allowed the people to complain publicly about problems so the problem can be solved. Also he let managers have more control over there farmland and other belongings. He also allowed the people to choose from a list of people for the legislative body instead of being run by one single government. An improvement was made because of him because before the Communist society would have no say any thing and wouldn’t be listened to.

Collapse of Communism

Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe and the USSR basically because communism wasn’t being as effective for them. They began to run out of money and it just getting worse. People tore down the Berlin Wall because they were upset that they weren't able to go to the other side of Germany. It was completely blocked because East Germany believed in communism and West Germany did not. Well for 28 years, no one was able to cross the border. Those who attempted were shot and other harsh treatments. After the countries had their own independence, prices increase from shock remedy where the government doesn't involve with the economy. Therefore people started getting higher paying jobs. The end of communism in the Soviet Union helped the world to feel more relaxed because they wouldn't have to fear that they would attack those who weren't communists. They were no longer isolating themselves anymore. And now, the Soviet Union turned to republicans as a result.

Creation of Israel

Zionism is a Jewish movement, established in the late 19th century in the state of Israel. The conflict that occurred when Israel was created was that Israel was attacked the next day by the Arab states and Palestinians, and their neighboring countries. All of Israel's neighboring countries were their enemies. The Arab states and the Arabs of Palestine felt Israel should have been theirs. The Palestinians and Israelis do not get along because they both want the land. From time, Israel lost that land because there were many countries in history that took over the land. The Holy land was ruled by the Israelites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Romans, Persians, Muslims, Christian Crusaders, the Ottoman Empire, and the British. Well at first the land belonged to the Jewish but was conquered the year after year and Palestinians began to live there. Palestinians felt that God wants to have that land and the Jews felt the same. At the end the Palestinians lost the war of 1948 and still today feel very angry at the Jews for taking their land.

Nelson Mandela and Apartheid

From what I have read the term Apartheid means to separate and in this era, it means separating races from each other. It’s a racial term that existed in South Africa. Nelson Mandela was a fighter before he was chosen as South Africa's leader. He was a leader in an underground political movement called the African National Congress. He acted out many parts that were against the white-ruled government. But this didn't last long when he was sentenced to life in prison. While in prison he was determined to be type support of hope for his people who went on with their lives with the Apartheid while he was in prison. He was finally set free in 1990, being in prison for 27 years. The day of his release was the beginning of the end of the Apartheid and he was rewarded with the Nobel Prize and elected to be the President in South Africa. Mandela fought for unity and women rights and thanks to his courage and determination, Apartheid was forbidden. Mandela was admired by the author because he got the freedom for his people and country (South Africa).

Africa Independence

Africa changed increased a great deal in the 20 year period from 1955 to 1975. In 1955 Africa had very few independent countries. Many of Africa's countries were controlled by the colonies. In 1975 most of Africa was independent countries but there were three countries that were still controlled by the colonies. Some of the Leaders that helped Africa gain their independente was a man named Kwame Nkrumah. He returned to the Gold Coast and he helped stage strikes and riots against the government. Kwame Nkrumah became the first minister and later the President of Ghana. Another Leader that helped Africa get their independent was Jomo Kenyatta became the President of the new nation which was Kenya. Finally he united various ethnic and language groups in his country.

Neolithic Revolution

Hundreds of years ago the Neolithic Revolution was a major turning point in human history. Before the Neolithic era humans were know as nomads who traveled from place to place in order to survive. They went hunting and gather food for survival. But later on the people started too settled down in one place which was sometimes near rivers and they learn to grow crops and domesticate animals. This time period became known as the Neolithic Revolution. As they were settling down they created social classes, and discovered many new things. The Neolithic farmers created calendars to keep track of when to plant and harvest there food in order to maintain a stable life. Through out the years, if they continued to kill animals wherever they went, the extinction of species would taken place, which lead to starve and eventually led the end of human existence.

The European Nation

For a time period of time Europe was the scene of recurrent and bloody wars. France and Germany fought each other three times wit a lot of fatalities. Several European leaders became convinced that the only way to secure a lasting peace between their countries was to unite them economically and politically. Their last verdict was to make the European Union an alliance of 25 nations that has changed the face of Europe. This union has been successful since it has created a new superpower in the world. The European Union is now an economic and political superpower that competes with the USA. Well now this economic union was successful and grew into other economic unions. Now the EU has its own parliament, military, and various organizations and committees that help maintain cooperation and trade between the EU member nations. Now the same nations who used to fight and kill each other are now together economically, politically, socially, and militarily which basically means that the probability that this countries would want to start war is very tiny.

Film Lesson: The Right Stuff

In the movie The Right Stuff the US and the USRR were competing in the Space Race. Both sides were trying to see who would get the first man up into space. In my point of view the Russians were the winners because they were the first to send up a satellite and the first again to send a human being into space. Well the US had an advantage of about two weeks to send there first man in Space but they wasted time on getting people and the Russians received that chance to go ahead of them. The US were ashamed by this because while the Russians were sending a real man we sent a chimp. After a few years and a few failed rocket designs the US finally got a rocket to fly. They were able to send a man named Alan Shepherd who was a fighter pilot into space. We finally passed the USRR in the race because he orbited the earth more times than the Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin did.
Well there were many scenes from this movie that will remind me of the Cold War. One scene that really caught to me was the breaking of the sound barrier. This really put the US in advantageous position. Another scene that will help bring back memories to me is the failed attempts of the US to get rockets to launch. Also the scene with Russia sending a man to space first is another scene I would also remember .This movie really helped me out a lot and it gave me perspective of the cold war.

Cuban Missile Crisis

In October 1962, an event called the Cuban Missile Crisis which was when the world was closest to a nuclear war. The nuclear missiles were installed by the Soviet just 90 miles off the coast of the United States. The Cuban Missile Crisis was part of the cold war, which also included the NATO and the Warsaw Pact. Nuclear weapons were build by the Warsaw while they were competing with the NATO after World War II. They were trying to build stronger weapons and mutual defense group to go against one another. The Warsaw was related to Cuban Missile crisis because they both wanted strong nuclear weapons.
The missiles were so close and everyone knows if one place is getting bomb the nations that sent the bomb is going to get a bomb. Well because of the organization NATO, the nations were going to defend each other. So if one bomb went off, many were going to go off weather people liked it or not. Well to combat this crises Kennedy tried to take out the missiles out of Cuba in a peaceful way and accomplished it.

NATO and the Warsaw Pact

NATO means the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which was formed between 12 countries from North America to Europe. Well the countries which were involved in the NATO wanted a mutual defense alliance because they knew that if one country is going to be involved in a war, and then other countries in NATO could back up and help them, so in this case they can form a stronger defensive group. After World War II many countries in Western Europe were in a great chaos and most of them became weak politically and militarily because they lost hundreds of soldiers and weren’t able to go on war with other countries that quickly. So the NATO decided to help these countries who had suffered a lot after World War II to form a strong defensive group against the spread of communist which is also known as the "iron curtain" which was establish between the Soviet Union and the Western Europe from 1945-1990. Well soon the relationship between the Soviet Union and the western had worsened and the NATO importance began to grow. By the year 1979 the NATO wanted to build up a defense by stopping the Soviet Union from building their nuclear weapons, but the Soviet Union didn’t stop they continue to build nuclear weapons. Well they also created a mutual defense alliance which was similar to the NATO but it was called the Warsaw Pact. The Warsaw pact deals mostly with satellites and it controls the alliances better by keeping the military organize in other countries of the alliance. The Soviet Union gain power quickly and became very powerful, so therefore socialist government was protected.

The film "Night and Fog" depicted the Holocaust as more realistic then in "Schindler's List" because it shows how the people were mistreated and how they died. This movie was very powerful because it shows how people died and we can also see dead bodies and it shows in depth what really happened during the holocaust. This film was more efficient than "Schindler's List" because it emphasizes the view of the life during the Holocaust. The Hollywood version emphasized the Holocaust better because it greatly shows what really happened in the Holocaust.

"Schindler's List" is a movie that explained the Holocaust in a way that most people picture but not in the way that it actually happened. It shows how people died and how people were also mistreated. THis movies shows how the Jews were enslaved and that man were put to work while they killed the women. They also killed the children.
One of the scenes that would stay with me was the one that included that children because we can clearly see how the children were treated at that time. It shows that children were treated as they were adults and also children were put to death because of the fact that they were useless to Germans.

US Atomic Bombing of Japan in 1945

The attack that the US took on Japan in 1945 was a big one because there was an atomic bombed use which wiped out a whole lot pf people. I think this was by far the biggest news article of the century because it was something that destroyed people both good and bad and also it destroyed a whole city which was very brutal because it destroyed thousands of people.
There was a story something around as big as this one and it was the attack on the Twin Towers which left many people dead. This was a terrorist attack which did not include atomic bombs but it was destroyed because of the two planes that crashed into the towers. This was not as big but I think it should be on the top 100. According to the list this is the only thing I would consider putting in the top 100.

Germany at War - WW II

Propaganda means publicity to promote something: information or publicity put out by an organization or government to spread and promote a policy, idea, doctrine, or cause.

The Nazi propaganda means that the Germans are on top of things and that they are the ones who have control or a willing to take control over all the other nations. The writing on the poster if translated into English means "Europe's victory is your prosperity." This is trying to show that if Germany were to lose then everyone in Europe may be living a life of crime which will eventually cause many deaths of innocent people.

In the poster we can see that Germany is on top of everything meaning that the other nations are depicted as being destroyed and also that Germany has control over them. Germany has the power to control the nations around it, according to the poster. In the poster we see that Germany has destroyed Germany and that there also is a cross with Winston Churchill's name on it. We can also see that there is a iron fist hitting Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union. The Cradle in the poster shows security and the land shows prosperity.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the Modernization of Turkey

Mustafa Kemal modernized Turkey and made it more secular in a way that he let people practice their religion without any interruptions. They were allowed to follow their faith in any way that they wanted to. He said that " the new Turkish State is a state of the people and a state by the people." This means that Turkey was made for the people by the people. According to the article “Mustafa Kemal Ataturk - Social Reforms” it says that “To give his nation a modern outlook, Atatürk introduced many reforms: European hats replaced the fez; women stopped wearing the veil; all citizens took surnames; and the Islamic calendar gave way to the Western calendar. A vast transformation took place in the urban and rural life. It can be said that few nations have ever experienced anything comparable to the social change in Atatürk's Turkey.”

Germany and The Treaty of Versailles

Germany and the Treaty of Versailles is a short documentary about the first world war and the effect that it had on Germany. Germany was blamed for all the war damage that was made, meaning that Germany had to pay for war repairs. Germany also lost 10% of their land, which was divided by the Allies. There economy declined greatly because the goods they were producing were being given to the allies, therefore they couldnt keep their economy strong. This also made many Germans starve because they had to give up their goods and they had no money to eat making people starve. Germany suffered greatly economically.
